Searching for the Goetz German Village (2022) Wednesday, April 13, 2022

One eveing in early 2Q2022, I was reviewing posts in my blog - when I was reminded of the clue about Louis Goetz's passport application in 1896 (See this post).

I went to the FamilySearch catalog and typed in  Germany, Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha. One of the reference books about the area that came up, with a digitized version, was:

"Geographical names in the duchy of Gotha and the Thuringian forest. Indexed."
"Germany, Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha - Names, Geographical"

I searched the book for a map and then spent an hour or so looking for the village "Ober Mallia" aka "Ober Mehler".

I found it!! It is northeast of Muhlhausen (the geographic center of Germany).  This graphic shows page 610 with a focus on the detail around Ober Mehler (abreviated Ob. Mehler).

From the index, page 585, it says Mehler, Ober information is on page 389 (E2).

I did a little research about the area ... just scanning some pages in Wikipedia. One item of note was this Wikipedia page on dialects in the area. I was trying to imagine someone saying "Ober Mallia" ... and how that would sound to an American.

Our Goetz ancestors' dialect details may shed some light on this since "{t}he Thuringian dialect is characterized by a rounding of the vowels, the weakening of consonants of Standard German".

Their dialect is: Nordthüringisch / North Thuringian: around Mühlhausen and Nordhausen

More to research ......

Looking for Filles du Roi (March 2019) Monday, December 16, 2019

Until today, I didn't have any identified filles du roi (King's Daughter) in my family ancestry.

While looking up a random couple of ancestors in an on-line database, I saw a note that said they were descendants of a fille du roi.

The couple is Francois Courtois and Marie Josephe Roiroux dit Laliberte, married in 1756 in French Canada.

After reading this fact and with the help of the on-line PRDH, I spent about 45 minutes searching back on each branch to identify any marriage that occurred during the filles du roi period (roughly 1663-1673). For each that did, I then compared the maternal ancestor's name to the list of filles du roi in a couple of books a) King's Daughters and Founding Mothers, The Filles du Roi, 1663-1673 by Peter J. Gagne and b) Les Filles du Roi en Nouvelle-France by Silvio Dumas.

It turns out that Marguerite Berger, Francois' grandmother, was a fille du roi from Saint-Sauveur, Ile-de-France, Paris.  She was born in 1653 to Madeleine Jeanne and Jean Berger. After her father died,  she left France for Canada, at age 19.

Marguerite first entered into a marriage contract with Jacques Buissiere. That was annulled and then she and Charles Courtois were married 9 Oct 1670 in Quebec. Her dowry was 300 livres and she received another 50 livres from the king. They lived in Lauzon and had six children.

Filles du roi are more generally known as the founding women of French Canada. They were recruited to come to French Canada by Louis XIV.

Following Rappolds/Fabers Back Further into the 1600s (Almost) (May 2018) Friday, May 11, 2018

Started by searching the familysearch catalog for any material on Michelbach an der Luecke.
The film 575068 came up with marriages for 1646-1652, 1664-1742 for Michelbach an der Luecke.

The film was digitized and thus online. Michelbach is around film page 508.
I snapped pages for Faber and Rappolds ... still need to figure out where they fit in the tree.

There were also several Ziegler entries but I did not snap those pages because I did not recognize the people.

Film title is Evangelische Kirchenbuchauszuege, 1586-1811
Author is Max Cramer from 1969.

-----------------
There's another film entry Kirchenbuch, 1646-1913 for Evangelische Kirche Michelbach an der Luecke (OA Gerabronn). It is film number 1528594, 95 and 96. They have the locked camera symbol but there is also a magnifying glass that says "search the index".

When I click on this symbol, the index comes up in the family search window -- 6700 entries. The Michelbach entries start on screen 19, half way down.

There are some Kohlers on this film from the 1829-1888.
Limited search to "Michelbach" and reviewed 879 records. Nothing interesting

Many Zieglers, and a few Hessenauers show up in this film (1528594).

On film 1528592 there are taufen for 1728/Georg Michael (hard to read) and marriage for Georg Michael/1757.

Then there's a taufen for Johann Michael Rappold/1763.
We tried to find the death for Johann Michael/1785, 3 Nov, but it was not on those pages (so maybe it is mis-indexed)
